The Dream Backyard

Los Banos 3 035

This lady has been inspiring to meet here in Los Banos California.  Sandy has Proverbs 31 working in her life right now!  Wait till I show you what all she does.

She said that she quit the corporate world and she and her husband decided to raise their  children with a lasting legacy of a true mom and dad. So she is a stay at home mom, with an incredible talent unfolding. Not only is she home for their children, but she also has found ways to make their budget work wonders right in their own backyard.
Los Banos 3 011

This is her backyard..... ok.... you say looks like a regular kind of a yard.  But what is happening here is a dream.  She is raising all kinds of fruit trees and  nut trees. Planted all around the sides carefully tended and properly with a real gardeners eye. How does she know what to do or plant? She reads books and asks other gardeners questions.  She started this in earnest to help feed their family and what has happened is wonderful!

Los Banos 3 013

She has pomegranates, plums, oranges, lemons, limes to name a few.

Los Banos 3 016

Her apricot tree is loaded with fruit.

Los Banos 3 017

The pear tree is producing nicely too.

Los Banos 3 014

THIS IS AN OLIVE TREE!!!

Los Banos 3 022

She gave me a peach from her tree.  (We ate it later that day - was so full of flavor)

Los Banos 3 019

Just look at this fruit!

Los Banos 3 009

This is one of the two tiny greenhouses that is also in the backyard. She grows all her own veggies and herbs from seeds - then plants them in beds along the sides of the house. Check this out!

Los Banos 3 001

She has peppers, of all kinds, several kinds of beans.....onions, garlic and more I can't remember.

Los Banos 3 002

There are strawberries planted all along the fronts of the beds - see the strawberry?

Los Banos 3 006

Look at these grapes!  Her grapevines are full of tender fruit.

Los Banos 3 007

Her herb gardens are full - chives, garlic, mint, rosemary, thyme to name a few.

Los Banos 3 023

The tomato beds are full of plants - it's going to be a bumper crop this year she thinks. So think about this..... instead of all the grass that does nothing but grows, gets cut, grows and gets cut - her yard is producing food! She took all the empty areas - sides, corners, fences lines and turned them into blessings for her family.

What does she do with all this food from her own backyard?  She makes jellies, jams, cans and freezes them for her family to eat year long.

Los Banos 3 029

And she also has built a business from her hands now.  She has a thriving business selling her homemade treats at bake sales and now she is getting so well known that people are coming to her front door to buy! Sandy's Jam n Desserts is alive and well.

Los Banos 3 031

Then we get to taste test the fruits of her labors, and my oh my what a treat it was! She has a orange jelly like none else, also orange marmalade and strawberry jalapeno, hot jalapeno jelly and a blueberry banana that is fabulous!  We kept on and on because each one was more amazing than the last!

She told us laughing that she is trying to get ready for a bake sale, but can't because people keep coming to the door to buy! Like us - there is no way we are leaving her home without some of her goodies.

Sandy I am amazed and can't wait for others to see you and what you are doing in your own home - keep going you are a inspiration to thousands of others now!

Healthy Slimming Tips

I just read a good blog post from Raylen from master cleanse secrets.

She shares some easy tips slimming down as quickly as
possible. A blog post that shows you 7 things you can start
doing today to slim down.

Some of these are so simple you might not believe they could work,
but a few small changes can equal some astonishing results.

You just receive the invitation to your family reunion and found
out it will be professionally filmed and photographed-and earlier
this morning the scale informed you're a few pounds away from your
ideal weight.

Don't panic, because there are some quick ways to drop the weight
and bring you closer to the real you. In fact, you don't have to
jump rope like you're on Rocky audition, and you won't have to
visit a surgeon to have your stomach stapled. In fact you can lose
as much as a pound a day by simply modifying your current lifestyle
habits. Here's how:

    * Halve-it: This is simple science, if you are only eating half
of the calories you normally consume, you will lose weight. Portion
control is one of the best ways to shed weight quickly. Do not
change what you eat; just eat exactly half of what you would
normally eat for lunch and dinner. For breakfast, eat a full, but
well balanced meal before 9:30am, to ensure that you can burn it
all off.

    * Practice the Cinderella-Carb Rule: Avoid eating carbs after
12:00pm (noon). Increase your level of vegetables and proteins for
lunch and dinner. You can keep the pancakes; just make sure they're
in the morning. This will ensure you have enough energy throughout
the day but also gain the benefits of losing weight.

    * Make better choices: OK, fried chicken is finger-licking
good, but so is a baked chicken breast and it has fewer calories.
Eat the foods you like, but eat them from cooking methods that are
healthier. Steamed, baked, poached and pan-seared are all better
methods than fried (and remember to halve it). Substituting whole
milk to skim milk in your cups of coffee can shave off hundreds of
calories.

    * Snack Switch: If you sneak snacks, replace all candies and
pastries with pieces of fruit or nut butters (like almond or peanut
butter). Oranges, bananas are also full of the sugar your body
wants, but it also has vitamins and nutrients and far less empty
calories. Even better are some vegetables which are tasty and
filling like cucumbers and carrots. Have as many of those that you
want. Drinking water to fill your stomach up is a great trick to
getting rid of hunger pains; it's a well known trick that
professional models use.

    * Take the Long Way: Find ways to increase your walking. Park in
the furthest place possible at your work parking lot and walk. When
you have breaks, walk somewhere, any where. Take stairs when you
can. For lunch, go to a mall, eat your meal at the food court and
spend twenty minutes walking. You don't even have to sweat...just
walk. These tiny expenditures of calories are like ATM fees, they
eventually add up-but this time in your favor!

     * Sweat it out: If you belong to a gym, use the steam room and
sauna. Sweating burns an amazing amount of calories and keeps your
metabolism in fifth gear long after after your sweat. The other
perk is that sweating is great for the skin.

If you can practice these tips for two weeks, you should be able to
shed at least 10 pounds off of your body.

Press Release For Immediate Release:

March 17, 2008 Contact: Ronnie Cummins, 218-226-4164 or Adam Eidinger, 202-744-2671 OCA &

Dr. Bronner's Issue Cease and Desist Letters to Organic Cheaters Major Companies Claiming "Organic" or "Organics" on Labels Use Cleansers Based on Conventional Agricultural and/or Petrochemical Material

ANAHEIM, CA - The Organic Consumers Association and Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps today issued a series of Cease and Desist letters to bodycare companies which have misbranded their products as "Organic" or "Organics" despite the fact that their cleansing ingredients are actually made from non-organic conventional and/or petrochemical material, preserved with petrochemical preservatives.

Dr. Bronner's has determined, based on extensive surveys, that organic consumers seek cleansing ingredients in "Organic", "Organics" or "Made with Organic" branded and labeled soaps, shampoos and bodywashes, that are made from organic as distinct from conventional agricultural material, produced without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, and such ingredients should be free of petrochemical compounds. The major cleansing ingredient in Jason "Pure, Natural & Organic" liquid soaps, bodywashes and shampoos is Sodium Myreth Sulfate, which involves ethoxylating a conventional non-organic fatty chain with the carcinogenic petrochemical Ethylene Oxide, which produces caricinogenic 1,4-Dioxane as a contaminant.

The major cleansing ingredient in Avalon "Organics" soaps, bodywashes and shampoos, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, contains conventional non-organic agricultural material combined with the petrochemical Amdiopropyl Betaine. Nature's Gate "Organics" main cleansers are Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate (ethoxylated) and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Kiss My Face "Obsessively Organic" cleansers are Olefin Sulfonate (a pure petrochemical) and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Juice "Organics", Giovanni "Organic Cosmetics", Head "Organics", Desert Essence "Organics", Ikove "Organic" Amazonian Avocado Bath & Shower Gel all use Cocamdiopropyl Betaine and no cleansers made from certified organic material.

Ronnie Cummins, Executive Director of the OCA, said: "The labeling and formulation practices of these companies are so unsupportable, we wonder sometimes if the garbage manager is in charge of product development and R&D."

Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Soap, in contrast to the brands noted above, contains cleansing ingredients made only from certified organic oils and contains no petrochemical preservatives. Since 2003, Dr. Bronner's has been certified under the USDA National Organic Program to label its products as being "Made with Organic" ingredients.

Company President David Bronner stated that, "We've grown increasingly frustrated with the companies in our industry who seem to feed off each others' misleading practices and show no inclination to clean up their formulations and live up to their organic branding claims."

Dr. Bronner's and the Organic Consumers Association plan to pursue legal remedies on Earth Day April 20th, if they do not receive responses indicating these companies noted above will cease organic branding by September 1, 2008.
