The Dream Backyard

This lady has been inspiring to meet here in Los Banos California.  Sandy has Proverbs 31 working in her life right now!  Wait till I show you what all she does.

She said that she quit the corporate world and she and her husband decided to raise their  children with a lasting legacy of a true mom and dad. So she is a stay at home mom, with an incredible talent unfolding. Not only is she home for their children, but she also has found ways to make their budget work wonders right in their own backyard.

This is her backyard..... ok.... you say looks like a regular kind of a yard.  But what is happening here is a dream.  She is raising all kinds of fruit trees and  nut trees. Planted all around the sides carefully tended and properly with a real gardeners eye. How does she know what to do or plant? She reads books and asks other gardeners questions.  She started this in earnest to help feed their family and what has happened is wonderful!

This is one of the two tiny greenhouses that is also in the backyard. She grows all her own veggies and herbs from seeds - then plants them in beds along the sides of the house. Check this out!

The tomato beds are full of plants - it's going to be a bumper crop this year she thinks. So think about this..... instead of all the grass that does nothing but grows, gets cut, grows and gets cut - her yard is producing food! She took all the empty areas - sides, corners, fences lines and turned them into blessings for her family.

What does she do with all this food from her own backyard?  She makes jellies, jams, cans and freezes them for her family to eat year long.

And she also has built a business from her hands now.  She has a thriving business selling her homemade treats at bake sales and now she is getting so well known that people are coming to her front door to buy! Sandy's Jam n Desserts is alive and well.

Then we get to taste test the fruits of her labors, and my oh my what a treat it was! She has a orange jelly like none else, also orange marmalade and strawberry jalapeno, hot jalapeno jelly and a blueberry banana that is fabulous!  We kept on and on because each one was more amazing than the last! 

She told us laughing that she is trying to get ready for a bake sale, but can't because people keep coming to the door to buy! Like us - there is no way we are leaving her home without some of her goodies.

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... and YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

'Diet' Sodas?

Why "Diet" Soda Makes You Fat

Many people see diet soda is an innocuous, harmless beverage that
can't possibly cause any harm to their waistline since it doesn't
have any calories. Think again.

Research published this summer in the medical journal Circulation
shows that people who drink more than one soda a day -- whether
it's regular or diet -- have an almost 50 percent increased risk
for metabolic syndrome, which doubles their risk for heart disease
and diabetes.

Two years ago, a study at the University of Texas Health Science
Center found that there was a 41 percent increase in the risk for
being overweight for every single can of diet soda a person
consumed daily.

But how can something with no calories increase the risk for
obesity and heart disease?

There are several possible ways.

First, my own theory is that the sweet taste works in the brain to
create a conditioned response. The body responds as it usually does
to normal sugar -- with insulin, the fat-storing hormone. Those
circuits in the brain are pretty primitive and ancient, and they
can't immediately distinguish chemical fakery. As far as your brain
is concerned, sweet means sugar. It's entirely possible that
physiologically, you would respond to aspartame in the same way as
you would to table sugar. It's only a theory, but it makes sense to
me.

Second, sugar creates its own cravings. Just as a taste of rum
creates an unstoppable craving in an alcoholic, it's entirely
possible that the taste of sweet, even if it's fake, creates the
same cascade of cravings in a carb addict that regular sugar does,
leading to overeating and binging and all the rest of the reasons
people put on weight.

Third, many people think that by drinking diet beverages they're
"saving" calories. They subconsciously allow themselves to eat
more, figuring it's not doing as much harm since they're drinking a
diet drink. The diet drink gives them subconscious "permission" to
eat more.

What's worse than making you fat, aspartame may be toxic. Aspartame
is made primarily from three ingredients: aspartic acid,
phenylalanine and methanol. Methanol, an alcohol, breaks down in
the body to formaldehyde, a poison if there ever was one.
Apologists for aspartame say that it doesn't create enough
formaldehyde in the body to cause any damage, but I'm not so sure.
Exposing children to formaldehyde levels as low as .75 mg daily for
several months has been shown to cause gradual toxicity. Plus, diet
soda is frequently stored in hot warehouses, causing chemical
breakdowns that went undetected in the original safety studies that
looked at "ideal" conditions.

Soda is bad news, whether regular or diet. Period.

Should I eat red meat?

20071213_redmeat I have studied health issues for women for a long time now - for several reasons. First I am one (ha!) and I have experienced quite a testimony in my own health thanks be to God. You can read my personal story in this blog, under the catagory called; 'Miracles and Cancer' God has been so merciful to me and cancer has brushed past my life! But today I am healthier and more alive than I have been in years!

Secondly I have a daughter and a grand daughter  and I want to help them live healthy, pain free, long and rewarding lives full of vitality and energy.

One of the biggest fears for women and a very important health problem here in is the threat of breast cancer.  The reality of it touching someone you love is real.  Why here, in one of the most progressive nations on earth? It is wise to read the research that is being done in other nations, to truly get a world view on health issues.

It concerns me that many health tests and the research done here, are carried out by companies that have a vested interest in the outcome, such as the huge market of the drug companies, and various others that are too numerous to mention here. As health research is done, it is wisdom to see what other nations have found also. And to see the results of health factors as it relates to cancer in other countries. Red meat 'ups breast cancer risk' Eating red meat significantly increases a post-menopausal woman's chance of breast cancer, research suggests. A University of Leeds team monitored 35,000 women over seven years. Older women who ate one 2oz portion a day (57 grams) had a 56% increased risk compared with those who ate none, the British Journal of Cancer reports. And those who ate the most processed meat, such as bacon, sausages, ham or pies, had a 64% greater risk of breast cancer than those who refrained.

However, experts warned it was extremely difficult to pin down the effect of specific parts of the diet on cancer risk, and said previous research had produced inconclusive results. Lead researcher Professor Janet Cade said younger, pre-menopausal women who ate large amounts of red and processed meat also had a raised risk of breast cancer - but the effect was not statistically significant. Saturated fats:

However, the researchers did find that a high overall consumption of meat appeared to raise the risk for women of all ages. Professor Cade said: "Meat is high in saturated fat, and saturated fat influences the amount of cholesterol the body makes. Cholesterol is precursor to oestrogen, which has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Cooking meat at high temperatures might also form carcinogenic compounds. My advice to women who are consuming relatively high amounts of red and processed meat on a daily basis is to consider reducing their intake".

Earlier findings from the same study showed that pre-menopausal women who have the greatest intake of fibre have cut their risk of breast cancer in half. Dr Alexis Willett, of the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: "This is an interesting study but because we eat a variety of foods it is difficult to separate out the specific effect of red meat on breast cancer risk". Differences in other factors such as age, weight and level of exercise were also found between red meat eaters and non-red meat eaters in this study and may also play a part in the risk of developing breast cancer.

Previous research studying red meat and breast cancer risk have been inconclusive. However, experts estimate that approximately 30% of all cancers in Western countries are linked to diet. Henry Scowcroft, of Cancer Research said women should maintain a healthy body weight, take regular exercise, and avoid regular portions of fatty foods like red and processed meat. A study published in November found eating large amounts of red meat might double young women's breast cancer risk. The Archives of Internal Medicine study looked at over 90,000 pre-menopausal women. Having one-and-a-half servings of red meat per day almost doubled the risk of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer compared to three or fewer per week.

Testing foods myself!

What about these apples?

I decided to run my own test on apples because of all the important information available about pesticides and herbicides and genetically created fruits and vegetables.

The last big event we had in the Community Center was the second week of October, and there were food trays leftover from a buffet one night.  So I took one of the fruit trays that was so pretty and decided to see how long it took for the raw sliced apples and grapes to start deteriorating. Normal apples would start turning brown within a day or two at most.  This is what is supposed to happen when the apple is whole and natural. It's supposed to break down and be digested internally completely being used by the body for vitamins, minerals, and various enzymes.  Natural good food.   Downstairs_cc_001_2

Now here is my picture - look closely at this! This tray was set aside on Oct 12th 2007.  Now it is November 9th and look at them!  They are now starting to change colors.  Think about this.... what is on them to keep them from turning naturally quickly. How is it that this fruit has remained perfect for almost a solid month!  There is some sort of preservative on or in the apples and grapes.   

Now think with me...... the substance that is on them as a perservative is going into your body.  It's still a chemical once you have ingested it.  What is it doing inside?  And how does it affect the digestion ability, the vitamin and mineral content of your system? Does it change to some other chemical once digestive juices mix with it? 

Here is the scarry part - NO ONE KNOWS. No one understands how these preservatives affect the human body long term.  Is  it worth cutting your own organic fruits and eating them fresh to protect your own body. You bet!    

Wonder why we all keep getting diseases, in this the most modern country on earth? We might look like the most prosperous nation on earth but that doens't mean that all of our prosperity has brought us good common sense.

What shall you eat?

Now we Americans have some comfort foods that when things don't suit us, we feed ourselves things that we 'think' make us feel better.  Cookies are one of those things.  Our minds and mouths are conditioned to think and taste sweet cookies as the satisfying way to soothe us. Do they taste good? of course they do.  But let me help you go beyond the instant gratification of cookies, to the reality of what 'blessing' that cookie is giving to you.  Cookies are dead foods.  What does that mean?  Basically this;  they have zero nutrition.  Nothing in them is going to nourish your body. Your mouth says, mmmmm so good.  But your heart says, 'oh no more fat to clog my arteries'!  Your stomach says, 'man there sure is nothing here for us to send to all of our body parts to give strength'. Your bloodstream says, 'what tha.........? Who is sending all this sugar in here!  We can't possibly keep things level with this garbage'! Your liver groans, 'not again!  more fat, more sugar, more white flour, more preservatives for me to sort out'.

How is it that our brains and mouths are so disconnected to the rest of our bodies?  It's a little like top management in a company that has no understanding of the actual workers who are running the plant.  After a while, something will happen and a revolt will start!

It will take a while, but all that stuff in those cookies is piling up somewhere in a back corner.  Thrown in disgust to the sidewalls of the intestines, slowly making it's own form of concrete. 

What's a person to do?  Retrain the brain!  Introduce your appetite to the rest of the workers, make them integrate and become knowledgeable of each other.  The top management of your 'plant' must become aware of your workers if you want to keep them all intact and happy lifelong.

Haven't you wondered at why we eat food, AND ALSO take vitamins and supplements? It's because our food sources are becoming weak and loaded with everything but wholesome nutrition. All of the chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, and growth hormones are entering our bodies and causing all sorts of health problems through our food sources.  Nationwide health food stores and many many books on healthy living will lead you to discover organic food as a way to feed your body wholesome food again.  Even Mayo Clinic is now recognizing the serious need to look into our food sources for answers to the life threatening illnesses and diseases of the 21st century. 

Exactly how much quantity of a pesticide sprayed on a food, actually enters the body is in question, but wisdom tells me - when everything eaten has the residue of pesticide on it - there is going to be an amount that enters the body.  And what does it do to the body? 

It would be interesting to find out the poison levels in pesticides, or herbicides, or insecticides.  Words that end in 'cides' make me wonder doesn't it you?  Any farmers want to give an answer here?  I may have to research that thought!
